OPI Terribly Nice Holiday 2023 Nail Polish Collection Swatch And Review

Hi friends! If you are reading this in September and are asking me why as a self proclaimed spooky girl who has been blabbing about it being Halloween season since August WHY are you posting about a holiday collection in September? I don’t have a real excuse other than it was available and I am a slave to the algorithm haha.

SO yeah today’s blog post is for the Holiday 2023 collection from OPI called Terribly Nice. At the time of posting, I don’t have much sale information on this one other than there are 14 polishes with a variety of finishes and the collection name. Oh! And I do know that this release officially launches on October 1st.

OPI is a US based mainstream brand. Their polishes are in 15ml bottles and 3 free.

Blame The Mistletoe

Description: a hot pink shimmer

Blame The Mistletoe this is the kind of shimmer polish that is more glows from within than shimmery. The formula and application were both fantastic.

I love hot pinks and dislike pearlized finishes. I have a feeling when OPI officially describes this it will likely be as a pearlized finish. In my opinion this is more of a shimmer than a pearl.

Looking back to the past year from OPI, I have counted a total of FOUR hot pink shimmery polishes. As someone who loves the color pink, even I think that’s a little bit excessive.

My photos show Blame the Mistletow in 2 coats plus glossy top coat. This will remove super easily and I didn’t experience any staining.

Chill Em With Kindness

Description: a milky white crelly base with a pink, purple to blue shift shimmer

Chill Em With Kindness I wanted SO badly to love this polish but unfortunately I just couldn’t get the base to look even. The shimmer is really beautiful in this polish but the milky base is just too patchy.

I don’t mind a good sheer polish and I don’t mind a (purposefully) milky white crelly base. No matter how carefully I tried to apply this polish, I just couldn’t get it to apply evenly.

My photos show Chill Em With Kindness in 3 coats plus glossy top coat. Removal will be super easy but slightly messy from the shimmer.

Five Golden Rings

Description: a camel brown crelly base with orange and bronze micro flakies

Five Golden Rings I feel like this is a atypical color for a holiday release. Don’t be fooled by the name, this isn’t a gold polish. I found the color is more like a warm camel brown.

There are some beautiful micro flakies in this polish which I wouldn’t have guessed to appear in an OPI release. While I do appreciate that this polish isn’t a typical mainstream looking polish, I can’t help but wish there was a gold in this release.

Both formula and application were fantastic, this is likely going to be a 2-3 coater depending on personal preference. If you don’t mind a little VNL, coverage is even in two coats.

My photos show Five Golden Rings in 3 coats plus glossy top coat. Nothing in here will dry down textured, but removal will be pretty messy.

Hot & Coaled

Description: a black pearl base with pink pink metallic and pink holographic glitters

Hot & Coaled I wanted this polish to be great and it was not. I didn’t realize this has a pearl base until I got the first coat on.

I ended up adding thinner to my bottle as it was just a little bit too thick for me. Once I added thinner, this applied pretty nicely. It will need to be built up as the base is kinda sheer so you can see the glitter.

I hate that this is a mix of metallic and holographic glitter. I really wish there was just holographic gliter in here. The holographic does give this a really pretty sparkled but being mixed with the metallics just seems kinda meh.

Since this polish is on the thicker side, I had hoped that it would be opaque on me in two coats. I found the base a little bit too uneven for me to call it a solid two coater.

My photos show Hot & Coaled in 3 coats plus a thick coat of glossy top coat. You might need a second coat of top coat for a glossy finish. Removal will of course be on the more difficult side, I would reccomend soaking this one off or using a peel off nase coat.

Hot Toddy Naughty

Description: a brown metallic

Hot Toddy Naughty as someone who loves brown polishes, this one was a little underwhelming for me. I feel like by the time I got this one swatched I was already in a bit of funk as far this release goes.

The formulation and application were both perfect. You do get some brush strokes through the shimmer but mst of them disappear as the polish dries.

It’s A Wonderful Spice

Description: a warm medium blush with brownze and orange micro flakies

It’s A Wonderful Spice I had a hell of a time trying to decide what color this is!! My first thoughts were terracotta. My next thoughts were that it reminded me of one of the colors I saw on a graphic featuring 30 shades of brick red when I was swatching the Orly Fall collection.

Since I still refuse to call colors like this a brick red, I am going to go with a medium blush. Once again, we have a beautiful crelly base with some micro flakies. I believe the flakies in this polish are the same as the two others in this release.

The formula was pretty fantastic and I didn’t have any fapplication issues. Other than my own color preferences of not really liking the base color on this one, I don’t have any complaints.

My photos show It’s A Wonderful Spice in 3 coats plus glossy top coat. Removal won’t be overly difficult but it will be messy.

Let’s Scrooge

Description: a teal crelly base with micro flakies

Let’s Scrooge is another beautiful crelly based polish. I was really happy with how opaque this one was. While not a one coater, it had really great coverage.

The shimmer/micro flakies in here were really pretty. They’re not the most in your face but they’re pretty nice! They don’t dry with any texture. This is another color that doesn’t necessarily scream holiday but it does scream winter.

My photos show show Let’s Scrooge in 2 coats plus glossy top coat. While I didn’t personally experience any staining with this polish, I kinda suspect that it might stain. Make sure to wear base coat!

Peppermint Bark And Bite

Description: a dark forest green with a delicate shimmer

Peppermint Bark And Bite I was very intrigued by this polish just based on the bottle. It’s such a dark green that in low lighting it will look black.

On the first coat, it’s pretty sheer and kinda streaky. I was really surprised at how thin this was, it was borderline watery. I am kinda bummed that coverage wasn’t quite there for me in two coats. I found that trying to work the polish and make it opaque in two coats, I just caused bald spots in the second coat as the brush started picking up the previous coats.

The shimmer in here is very subtle. It kinda looks like a glitter as far as how scattered the effect is. I won’t call it a blink and you miss it shimmer but it’s not in your face either.

My photos show Peppermint Bark And Bite in 3 coats plus glossy top coat. Even with three coats, I did notice some dark spots in natural lighting.

Put On Something Ice

Description: a sheer icy blue to purple to pink shimmer with silver metallic and silver holographic glitter

Put On Something Ice is the second pearly shimmer with glitters in this release. Based on the promo images, I foolishly thought this was going to be a white glitter crelly. It’s a very sheer base with a blue, purple to pink shimmer with a mix of metallic and holographic glitters.

The formula in itself isn’t bad, I didn’t have any issues with the application. The glitters spread out fairly evenly without needing to do anything special. I just can’t get myself to let go of my general dislike of pearly bases with glitter.

In general, I tend to find that the more coats you do with this type of finish the worse it looks, so I made the executive decision to only swatch it in two coats. And I also only did two coats because I was sad that this isn’t that white crelly that I thought it was.

This will work really well as a topper, in my live swatch video I also show it as a topper.

My photos show Put On Something Ice in 2 coats plus glossy top coat. The glitters will dry down slightly textured and will make removal more difficult.

Rebel With A Clause

Description: a Santa red creme

Rebel With A Clause is the obligatory red creme in this release. I feel like it wouldn’t be a holiday collection, let alone an OPI holiday collection, without a Santa Clause red thrown in.

If there is one type of polish that OPI knows how to do damn well, it’s going to be a red creme. This applies so beautifully and was pretty much opaque in one coat.

Salty Sweet Nothings

Description: a pale pinky nude with silver metallic/pearl micro flakie

Salty Sweet Nothings on the surface, this is a polish that me 3 years ago would have HATED. This is the kind of color that I had to try (multiple times) to gain an appreciation for.

The formula was pretty great, slightly on the thinner side but super easy to apply. The micro flakies are tiny so they won’t dry textured. Coverage is fairly sheer but even so this can work in 1-3 coats depending on your personal preference.

I really liked coverage in two coats but opted to add a third for my swatch photos.

My photos show Salty Sweet Nothings in 3 coats plus glossy top coat. Removal will be fairly easy but very messy.

Shaking My Sugarplums

Description: a medium jean blue with pink shimmer

Shaking My Sugarplums I had high hopes for this polish. In the bottle, you get a beautiful medium jean blue color and the shimmer looks so pretty. While the polish is sheer enough that the shimmer really comes out, it’s so sheer that without doing thick coats you won’t be able to get any real opacity.

On the first two coats, this is sheer and fairly uneven. I ended up going in for a thicker final coat to try to get a little bit more opacity. The shimmer is really pretty, it has a pink to gold color shift.

Sickeningly Sweet

Description: a pale lavendar crelly

Sickeningly Sweet my first thoughts on this was “What an odd addition to a holiday release”. This is a very pretty color but it doesn’t scream holiday, let alone winter to me.

I was surprised that the formulation on this is more of a crelly than a creme. While I don’t have the biggest OPI collection, I can’t think of too many crellies by them. I feel like the squishy look this has a crelly elevated it from being just another creme to me.

My photos show Sickeningly Sweet in 2 coats plus glossy top coat. This is likely to be a 2-3 coater depending on application and personal preference. When I was recording my live swatches, I had a lot of dark spots on the nail.

Yay Or Neigh

Description: a grey crelly with orange and bronze flakes

Yay Or Neigh is one of the ‘wow I never expected OPI to make a polish like this’ colors in this release. It has a very indie nail polish vibe to it which I kind of like!

Formula wise, this was pretty great. The base is sheer enough to let you see the flakies but opaque enough to reach full opacity. The flakies all spread out very evenly without giving off any texture.

I am very torn about this polish. I love grey crellies but I am kinda meh about this one.

My photos show Yay Of Neigh in 3 coats plus glossy top coat. If you don’t mind a little bit of VNL, coverage is pretty good in two coats. Removal won’t be overly difficult but it will be messy.

Final Thoughts

As someone who isn’t much of a holiday person, I went into swatching this collection hoping for a lot of razzle dazzle. OPI seems to hoard glitter for the holiday releases so I was really hoping for some sparkle.

I really appreciate that we have such a variety of finishes in this release. I just wish there was a smidge more razzle dazzle? I am particularly bummed that we didn’t get any true golds in this release. Last year’s collection was my first time ever buying a full OPI collection and I’m a little disappointed that I don’t like this year’s as much as that one.

Nothing this year is really standing out to me as things that I would buy outside of for review so I don’t have any top picks for you all this time around.
