Hey friends! Today’s blog post is for some new flakie top coats, I’m sorry flakie TACOS by Holo Taco. These nail polishes came out earlier in the month and I was undecided on if I was going to review them or not. I went back and forth on it and then I got a couple of people asking me to review them.
I did purchase these polishes and at the time of posting, both are still available. However, they are also seasonal so they will likely be disappearing at some point to return next winter.
As always, links and sale details can be found at the end of the post. I also have one comparison to Silver Flakie Taco since I had something kinda similar in my collection.
I will have a live swatch video up for these sometime next week. As I mentioned in a previous post, all of my equipment is currently packed away since construction is happening in my nail room.

Holo Taco is a US based nail polish brand. Their polishes are in 12ml bottles, 10 free, cruelty-free, and vegan.
Red Flakie Taco
Description: a metallic red-magenta asymmetrical foil flakes in a clear base
Red Flakie Taco had a great formula. The base was just slightly on the thicker side but I found it very easy to work with. For the most part, the metallic flakes spread out evenly and easily. I did find that I had a couple of spots where they seem to wanna clump together, but I am getting that was user error as it didn’t always happen.
As someone who doesn’t like red, this polish isn’t really for me. I think if I paired it with a different base color maybe I would like it more. For my swatches, I opted to pair it with Holly-Day by China Glaze. It took all of my willpower not to use a gold base. I did like it with a matte top coat though.
My photos show Red Flakie Taco in 1 coat with both glossy and matte top coats. This polish dries down fairly dully so you will want top coat for a glossy finish.
I don’t own any red metallic flakie toppers to compare to this one. I heard Rogue Lacquer has one but I’m not sure on what it’s called or if it is still available. The sliver just shows how the flakies in Red Flakie Taco compare to Gold Flakie Taco.
Silver Flakie Taco
Description: Bright metallic silver asymmetrical foil flakes in a clear base
Silver Flakie Taco had a fantastic formula. I didn’t have the issue with this one where the flakies clumped together. There was also more of a variety in flakie sizes between this polish and Red Flakie Taco.
None of the flakies dried down textured but you will want top coat to give this a glossy finish.
I paired this polish with one of my favorite polishes, Frostbite by China Glaze. I LOVED the combination of the two polishes made together,
My photos show Silver Flakie Taco in 1 coat plus both glossy and matte top coats. Removal won’t be difficult at all but it will be messy.
The most similar nail polish I have in my collection to this one is by Sweet & Sour Lacquer called Silver (Sweet & Sour Lacquer Precious Metals). The silver flakies are denser in it and you can reach full coverage in 3 coats.
And because I feel like someone might want to see how the flakies in this polish compare to Gold Flakie Taco, here you go. This does seem like it’s a silver version to the gold.
Final Thoughts
So overall, I think these are both great toppers. However, I also can recognize that metallic flakie toppers aren’t really my favorite thing ever and that I don’t reach for them very often.
I particularly really like these with matte top coats. By the way, for the matte top coat, I used Night Owl Lacquer’s Gone Matte. I bought a bunch of matte top coats a few months ago to test out and have come to the conclusion that Gone Matte is my new favorite ride and die. Shout out to Lindsay from Night Owl Lacquer for sending me a big ol refill sized bottle to me!
I loved Gold Flakie Taco that came with the Tea Cremes collection so I could see myself reaching for Silver Flakie Taco (I want to for some nail art actually) but y’all know, me and reds don’t generally click.
My favorite from this release is going to be Silver Flakie Taco.
