Hi friends! Today I am sharing a beautiful quad of polishes courtesy of Mooncat. This is their Band Of Misfits release which is made of up 4 polishes that were all previously supposed to be released in other collections but didn’t quite make the cut.
This collection is available right now on the Mooncat website. As always, I will have more sale details and links at the end of the post. Check out my live swatch video if you would like to see these in natural lighting!

Heavy Metal
Description: a sheer white lacquer filled with ULTRA-fine silver holographic glitter flakies and icy blue shimmer
Heavy Metal was a surprise like for me. In the bottle, I thought the holo looked nice but nothing special. Boy was I wrong!
The base is an incredibly sheer white, so sheer that you don’t see much of the base color. The majority of the opacity comes from the shimmer and glitters. There was a surprise purple color shift to the shimmer by the way.
The glitters are super tiny so they do not dry down overly textured. I found one coat of top coat smoothed everything out nicely.
My photos show Heavy Metal in 3 coats plus glossy top coat. Removal is going to be incredibly messy, use the soak off method for easiest removal.
Moonicorn
Description: a light lilac lacquer filled with green shimmer and micro holographic glitter
Moonicorn had a fantastic crelly-like formula. Since this is in a more opaque crelly base, you can build it up to reach full opacity.
I did find that the base was slightly on the thicker side but not so thick that I needed to add thinner or struggled with application. The base color is a very pale pink leaning lilac that I don’t really generally gravitate towards. I have a feeling if not for the shimmer and holographic, I probably wouldn’t care too strong for this one.
The shimmer is pretty strong and has a green to blue (at extreme angles) color shift. The holographic gives the polish a very delicate sparkle without any texture.
My photos show Moonicorn in 2 coats plus glossy top coat. I thought for sure this was going to need three coater for me. I had very slight VNL but my coverage was full enough that I liked it in two. Nothing in here is going to dry down textured, removal will be very easy.
I have seen some chatter that this polish is a dupe to Bee’s Knees Lacquer‘s Doomicorn (Polish Pickup June 2021 – Over The Rainbow). Doomicorn is a very sheer jelly base with a similar green to blue shifting shimmer. Where Doomicorn is incredibly sheer, Moonicorn isn’t. Doomicorn has a stronger shimmer effect due to it being so sheer. So yeah, they’re not dupes. Other than both being purple bases with green to blue shimmer, they’re not really all that similar.
Sin Eater
Description: a deep wine purple lacquer filled with subtle color-shifting red-to-orange-to-green shimmer
Sin Eater On the first coat, I was kinda feeling like this one wasn’t going to be for me. It’s a very deep purple that leans towards berry, and kinda uneven. This is going to be one of those polishes that I would recommend you not judge it on the first 2 coats and definitely build it up in three coats.
In two coats, it’s kinda patchy looking and underwhelming, to be honest. Once you add the third coat, you get the full depth of color that you see in the bottle as well as having an even coverage. It’s jaw dropping at how meh it was at first but WOW fully built up.
The shimmer in here is larger in particle size kinda like a micro glitter but without the texture. For the most part, you just see the red to orange color shift but green comes in at extreme angles.
My photos show Sin Eater in 3 coats plus glossy top coat. Removal for this polish will be pretty easy but messy. I didn’t experience any staining with it but I could see it being a stainer.
Spaceoddity
Description: a multichrome flakie lacquer that shifts between shades of berry pink, purple, orange, and green
Spaceoddity was the polish that I thought was going to blow me away the most but ended up not. Don’t get me wrong, I love polishes like this and have purchased more than I would like to admit. However, I wasn’t wowed like I thought I would be wowed.
The flakies all spread out very evenly and lay down flat so they do not dry textured. They mainly stay in the pink/berry color range, I was able to see the orange at extreme angles.
The formula and application for this polish were both fantastic. I could see folks with nails longer than me needing three coats to reach full opacity.
My photos show Spaceoddity in 2 coats plus glossy top coat. Removal won’t be overly difficult but it will be messy. I didn’t experience any staining with it.
Final Thoughts
For a quad of polishes that weren’t originally created to fit the same theme, these all go together really well. I have a hard time disliking a pink, blue, and purple color story.
As I mentioned earlier, I thought for sure that Spaceoddity was going to be my favorite from this release. So imagine my surprise when it was actually Heavy Metal that knocked my socks off?? There was just something about the holographic paired with the shimmer that just spoke to me.
