Hey friends! Today’s blog post is for the newest collection from Holo Taco. For September’s launch we have the Dark Rainbow collection! As someone who is kinda obsessed with rainbows, I was pretty dang excited to see the email from HT about sending me this collection!
This is a 7 piece collection that is available right now on the Holo Taco website. As always, links and sale details can be found at the end of the post. For my lighting I made sure to bring all of the polishes outside in natural light because these are really holographic! I forgot to take pictures for comparisons but I do have comparisons up in my live swatch video so be sure to check that one out too!

Holo Taco is a US based nail polish brand. Their polishes are in 12ml bottles, 10 free, cruelty-free, and vegan.
Crimson Void
Description: a dark scarlet red shade
Crimson Void had a really great formula. The base color to my eye is a dark burgundy. It was a cooler in tone so I wouldn’t call it a blood red. The holographic in here was very strong! Of course, the holo looked best out in the sunlight but I did find the lighting around my house, I could see the holographic.
This polish was very pigmented and while I didn’t experience any staining, I would definitely suggest wearing a base coat or even doubling up on your base coat for this polish.
My photos show Crimson Void in 2 coats plus glossy top coat. Nothing in here will dry textured or be difficult to remove. It does however dry down very dull so you will want top coat for a glossy finish.
Burnt Bridges
Description: a burnt orange/brown linear holographic
Burnt Bridges also had a great formula. Every year around this time I get at least 1 polish that is a burnt orange which to my eye looks brown and I question, what exactly is the difference between burnt orange and brown? Indoors, I would have called this one a warm brown but once I got it out into the sunlight I could see the orange undertones.
I will say, I thought this was an interesting choice for a rainbow collection. I questioned it up until I brought it outside and saw how it looked in the sun. It was really gorgeous and this is one of my favorites from the release.
My photos show Burnt Bridges in 2 coats plus glossy top coat. Like all of the polishes in this release, it does dry dull so you will want top coat for a glossy finish.
Amber Apathy
Description: a dark yellow linear holo
Amber Apathy also had a great formula. I know, broken record but it’s true. The base color for this polish to my eye was a medium yellow. I wouldn’t call it a mustard yellow but maybe like an amber with some bronzey undertones.
I was very surprised at how well this covered. I figured since it was a yellow, that it would be a solid 3 coater but coverage is really great in just two coats. Nails shorter than mine will likely be good in 2. I did have very slight VNL with it in 2 coats. Just for the sake of curiosity, I did add a third coat. The third coat brings this to being 100% opaque and deepens the base color just a tiny bit.
My photos show Amber Apathy in 3 coats plus glossy top coat. One more time, you will want top coat as this dries dull.
Lost In The Woods
Description: deep hunter green linear holographic
Lost In The Woods had a fantastic formula. I found in person, that this polish ranged from looking very green to just slightly on the teal side. The cool blue/teal undertones seemed more apparent out in natural lighting.
This was one of the more opaque polishes in the release, which isn’t saying as much since they were all pretty opaque on the first coat. The holographic was super strong and looked really beautiful.
My photos show Lost In The Woods in 2 coats plus glossy top coat. This is another polish where it is very pigmented so be sure to wear base coat with this polish. And again, you will want top coat for a glossy finish.
Sunken Secrets
Description: a dark blue linear holographic
Sunken Secrets have a fantastic formula. This was another of the more opaque polishes and it was *almost* a one coater on me. For shorter nails, this will likely be a 1 coater.
I really thought for sure this one was going to stain because it is very pigmented! I didn’t experience any staining with it though.
My photos show Sunken Secrets in 2 coats plus glossy top coat. I am a sucker for blue polishes so I really liked this one.
Violet Nightmares
Description: a deep royal purple linear holographic
Violet Nightmares also had a really great formula. I would say the official description is accurate. This is a deep purple shade.
Again, I thought for sure this was going to be a stainer but I didn’t experience any staining with it. Definetly wear a good base coat with this one!
My photos show Violet Nightmares in 2 coats plus top coat.
Dead Petals
Description: dark magenta linear holographic
Dead Petals had a fantastic formula. This was a little bit sheerer than some of the other polishes on the first coat but it did reach full opacity for me in 2 coats.
I was surprised that I liked the base color on this one as much as I did. While I was swatching, I wrote it in my notes that it seemed really similar to Crimson Void but looking at both side by side, they aren’t really that similar. This has more purpley/magnenta undertones. I intially was calling it a berry where CV is a burgundy.
My photos show Dead Petals in 2 coats BUT I think I should have done a third as I had a few light spots towards the tips of my nails. This will likely be a 2-3 coater depending on your nail length.
I think this one will be a 2-3 coater depending on your nail length and thickness of coats. I used 2 coats for my photos but I did have a couple of light spots towards my tips.
Burnt Bridges
Description: a rust-coloured linear holographic
Burnt Bridges had a fantastic formula. I do think this one is an interesting addition to a rainbow collection. The information on the collection that I was instially sent said this one was a orange/brown. Indoors, I wasn’t really see the orange side to this. I was calling it a burnt orange up until I read the polish descriptions on the website this morning.
Every Fall since I started this blog I get sent a polish that is described as a burnt orange that then sends me into a spiral trying to decide if there is in fact a difference between brown and burnt orange. I feel like there should be but I just don’t know anymore.
I will say, once I got this one outside I could in fact see where the orange was coming to play. However, in the lighting inside of my home this was pretty much just brown to my eyes.
My photos show Burnt Bridges in 2 coats plus glossy top coat.
Nail Art
Holo Taco asked me to create some nail art to go with this release. I opted to do a drag marble design. To create this design, I laid each color out on a nail art mat and dragged a striper brush through each color. I then left the design dry for a few minutes, peeled them up and stuck them onto my nails.
It has been a hot minute since I did this technique and while it wasn’t perfect I am really happy with how this came out!
Final Thoughts
Overall, I thought the colleciton was fantastic! While dark vampy colors aren’t really something that I personally gravivate towards the rainbow color story got me. Whenever a collection can be setup in ROYGBIV order, that immediately gets my attention.
As I mentoned I thought Burnt Bridges was an interesting/strange color choice BUT I will say that it does fit really well in the orange spot. My favorites from this release are going to be Amber Apathy, Crimson Void and Dead Petals.
