China Glaze What’s The Scoop?

Hi friends! The day I am typing up this blog post it is currently 84F degrees. I feel like today’s weather is very fitting for the blog post. I have the first of many summer collections. I feel like it’s fitting to start off Summer 2023 collections with one that I was very much looking forward to!

For Summer 2023 China Glaze is giving us the What’s The Scoop? collection. It is a 6 piece release that I believe is inspired by ice cream/ice cream parlors. All of the polishes have a crelly/jelly-like formula and while built up they look similar cremes, they are not! The promotion hasn’t yet started but I will have some links at the end of the post if you want to grab it early!

China Glaze is a US based mainstream brand. Their polishes are in 14ml bottles, 7 free and cruelty free.

Tan-Burr-ine

Description: a bright neon pink crelly

Tan-Burr-ine had a beautiful formula. While this polish is a crelly base, I found it to be the most opaque from the collection. It still has that squishy look so you do need to build it up for opacity. This is one of the easier polishes to work with in the release.

This is one of the colors in the release that I knew I was going to love! This is a BRIGHT super pank which is always a hit with me.

Thanks to being a neon, this color was tricky to photograph. I found with my warm undertones, it photographed a little more red toned indoors but it is definitely a pink.

My photos show Tan-Burr-ine in 2 coats plus glossy top coat. Nails longer than mine will probably want a third coat to cover up VNL.

I thought for sure this was going to be more similar to Mountain Flower from the Eco Glaze line. Side by side, Mountain Flower looks cooler in tone. This was most similar in color to China Glaze Escape Reality, but even that isn’t an exact dupe.

Will That Be A Cup Or A Cone?

Description: a bright neon bubblegum pink

Will That Be A Cup Or A Cone? had an ok formula. It was a little streaky, and a little bit thick but I didn’t hate the application. I will say, don’t overwork this one because you will just cause issues for yourself.

This is such a fun and bright shade of pink. While the formula wasn’t the best ever, it was definitely one of the better ones in this release. I

My photos show Will That Be A Cup Or A Cone? in 3 coats plus glossy top coat. If you aren’t super picky about dark spots, you might be able to get away with 2 thicker coats.

I thought this color was an odd choice seeing how we just got a bubblegum pink shade (Kid In A Candy Store) in the Spring collection of this year. But side by side they are 2 different colors.

Glad You Melt Me?

Description: a sheer bright tangerine crelly/jelly

Glad You Melt Me? was the first polish from the collection that I swatched and boy was I surprised at how sheer this one is! It has jelly/crelly like formula, so it has a sheer squishy look to it.

Other than being sheer, the formula was pretty great. It was on the thinner side and had a tendency to run down the stem of the brush, but it didn’t feel watery.

I love the shade of orange! It reminds me of the drink Tang. If you can get past the sheerness

Comparison: China Glaze None Of Your Risky Business on my pointer finger, Glad You Melt Me on my middle nail, Night Owl Lacquer Glowing Glowing Gone on my ring and China Glaze Stoked To Be Soaky on my pinky.

I couldn’t think of anything in my collection that was exactly the same as this polish. The crelly-factor makes it more unique even if I don’t think the color is unique.

Berry Yummy

Description: a bright sunshiney yellow

Berry Yummy I found the formulation to be pretty finicky to work with. It was really thin so working in thick coats makes a huge mess but working in thin coats makes it incredibly streaky. Since this polish is so thin, it is very runny make sure to keep an eye on the stem of your brush while polishing.

I love this shade of yellow but I am not sure if I love the color enough to be ok with the formula. Which is unfortunate because it really does look beautiful.

My photos show Berry Yummy in 3 coats plus glossy top coat. If I looked really closely at my nails, I did have a few dark spots.

Comparison: China Glaze Sunshine Pop on my pointer finger, Berry Yummy on my middle nail and Night Owl Lacquer First Light on my ring finger. Sunshine Pop was the most similar yellow I had in my China Glaze collection, however, it has shimmer in it so it’s not really the same.

Frozen In Lime

Description: a neon lime green crelly

Frozen In Lime had a so so formula. I wanted to love this color so much because I LOVE neon greens but this polish was also very thin, very watery and oh so streaky.

While this isn’t the worst neon green that I have ever tried, I just don’t think this one was very good either.

Comparison: I have China Glaze Frosty Lime (Dippin Dots collection) on my pointer, Frozen Lime on my middle nail, Once A Witch, Always a Witch (Vain Villans collection) on my ring finger. Out of the three, I would only recommend Frosty Lime.

Freezer Burn

Description: a vibrant blue crelly

Freezer Burn is such a pretty color. This was the polish that I was most excited about trying. The formula was much better than many of the other polishes in the collection but it still had that jelly/crelly formulation so it starts off a little sheer and streaky.

This is a vibrant oceany kind of blue. I love shades of blue like this so I really enjoyed this one. It looks very squishy on the nail.

I found coverage is pretty good in 2 coats but I did have some VNL and a few light spots. I think for personal wear, I would probably wear this in 2 coats anyway. I did end up adding a third coat for my swatches.

For comparison, I have Night Owl Lacquer Feeling Blue Without You, Freezer Burn on my middle nail, Orly It’s Brittney Beach on my ring finger and China Glaze Blue Raspberry Ice on my pinky. I feel like Freezer Burn is the crelly version of Feeling Blue Without You.

Final Thoughts

I feel so conflicted about this collection. On one hand, I think the color story is beautiful. I know, huge shocker Nicole is liking a rainbow release.

When I bought this collection, I was disappointed that the polishes were all creme finishes. I don’t know if them actually being crellies makes me feel more or less disappointed? I like the squishy look the polishes have thanks to that formulation but the application process for half of the polishes was SO frustrating!

I really wanted more from China Glaze this year for the summer. I had hoped since Salon Perfect released that cool reflective glitter collection, that China Glaze would give us something interesting (they share a parent company). I am still holding out hope for a surprise collection from China Glaze before it’s time for Fall collections.

Freezer Burn and Tan-Burr-ine were my stand out top picks for sure.
