Bees Knee Lacquer – What We Do In The Shadows

[Press Samples – Post Disclosure Page]

I am so excited for this blog post today! Bees Knees Lacquer is a brand that I have been wanting to try for ages so when Sarah messaged me about swatching for them, I screamed! The What We Do In The Shadows collection is inspired by the tv show by that same name. This is a 10 piece collection with a variety of finishes. I will sound like a broken record because the formulas for all these were fantastic. This collection is available now on the Bees Knees Lacquer website. As always links and sale info will be at the end of the post. Don’t forget to watch my live swatch video on my new YouTube channel!

Bees Knees Lacquer is an indie nail polish brand based in the US. Their polishes are handmade and 5 free.

All Jesk, No Gregor

Description: lapis blue with a soft blue shimmer
Price: $11

All Jesk, No Gregor has a really great and easy formula. The blue base is a nice medium blue that has a hint of like duskiness (not sure if that’s a real word or not). The shimmer is extremely strong so I think the description is off in calling it a soft blue shimmer.

There are some brush strokes when it’s wet but they seem to all disappear when it’s dry. This applies like something between a jelly and a crelly so it needs to be built up. I used 3 coats for my photos.

Bat!

Description: a raisin polish with glowing green shimmer
Price: $11

Bat! has a really nice formula. I wasn’t too crazy on the actual shade in the bottle but on the nail, it is very impressive! It’s like a medium toned greyed out purple.

The shimmer seems to shift from green to blue. I think shorter nails would be good in 2 coats. I used 3 for my photos.

Bloody Mary

Description: a blood red ultra holo
Price: $13

Bloody Mary applies smoothly and easily. It’s very opaque in 1 coat but not quite a 1 coater. The holo flame gives this an almost metallic look. It’s extremely holographic in person.

This a true blood red linear holographic. My brain kept calling “Halloween red” which I didn’t even know was a thing but apparently, according to my brain, it is. I used 2 coats for my photos.

Dark Greetings

Description: a lightly tinted black polish with green to blue magnetic and red to green ghost flakes
Price: $14

Dark Greetings This one was the sheerest out of all of the polishes but the formula and application were both perfect. The magnetic shimmer pigment is very color shifty even without the magnet

If you like duochrome polishes, this one without the magnetic effect will make you happy. I used 3 coats plus 1 extra coat to do the magnetic effect.

Guillermo Buillermo

Description: a dove gray polish with glowy purple shimmer
Price: $11

Guillermo Buillermo Another great formula. It applies smoothly and evenly. The shimmer isn’t as in your face as some of the other shimmers in this collection but it’s still strong. I was seeing a pink to purple color shift on the nail. It’s very opaque and I see most people good in 2 coats. My photos show it in 3 coats.

I Don’t Live To Drain, I Drain To Live

Description: a silver to green to blue multichrome
Price: $13

I Don’t Live To Drain, I Drain To Live has a really nice smooth formula and applies easily. The colors I was seeing on my nails were silver, greenish teal, blue with purple at extreme angles. Really nice coverage in 2 coats. I think shorter nails would be good in 2 coats but I used 3 for my photos. A little brush strokey but they even out for the most part when dry.

One Human Alcohol Beer Please

Description: a black polish with rich sapphire shimmer
Price: $11

One Human Alcohol Beer had a beautiful formula. The shimmer is so strong in this that it looks like a blue polish. Until I read the description, I thought it was a dark navy polish. It’s absolutely gorgeous in person! The shimmer is a bit larger than the other shimmers in this collection so that it’s kind of like a fleck or a *very* small flakie. I used 2 coats for my photos.

Operation Accidentally Kill the Baron

Description: a soft, pure silver holo.
Price: $13

Operation Accidentally Kill the Baron This is a pure silver linear holo. It’s very opaque on the first coat. The holo pigment in this is very smooth, it reminds me of holo powders.

I own a few different silver linear holographics, and I think this is the smoothest (smallest particle size) one I own. I used 2 coats for my photos.

Superb Owl

Description: blackened indigo ultra holo
Price: $13

Superb Owl applies really beautifully. Formula wise, it’s identical to Bloody Mary. It’s extremely holographic even in normal lighting around the house.

This was 95% opaque in 2 coats on me. I think this will be opaque in 2-3 coats depending on how thick of a coat you use.

Vampires Only

Description: black to red multichrome with a silver magnetic shimmer
Price: $13

Vampires Only Yes! I am loving that brands are coming out with unique twists to using the new black to red multichrome pigment! The silver magnetic shimmer gives this a greyed out look without the magnetic. It is very opaque, especially for a multichrome.

Final Thoughts

These polishes were my first time trying the Bees Knees formula and I really loved them! The formulas were perfect, the application was a breeze and I just love their wide paddle brush!

If I was going to pick favorites from this release, I would pick Guillermo Buillermo, Dark Greetings, All Jesk, No Gregor and Vampires Only.
