Hi friends! If you didn’t know this about me, I am a sucker when it comes to rainbows. I am also a sucker whenever I am thinking about buying something on Etsy and then receive a 10% off coupon from the seller shortly thereafter to then buy what was in my cart plus a couple of extras. Which is how I came into possession of the polishes featured in today’s post.
I stumbled across this indie nail polish brand, Familiar Polish on Instagram. I *think* someone in my Discord server mentioned them? I honestly can’t remember which happened first but they are a new-to-me-brand. I really like the spooky vibe they have going so I purchased quite a few things that just arrived a few days ago.
The polishes featured in this post are all from their Gothy Neons collection. Going by the brand’s Instagram page, these were released in June of 2022. They all feature a neon jelly/crelly base with black glitter shreds. There is also a 6th purple polish in this collection but I only have 5 fingers.
This type of polish reminds me a ton of the Nine Zero Smoothie Bar collections. Where the Smoothie Bar collections are neon pastels with black glitter shreds, the Gothy Neons are just full on bright AF neons. Side note, the Nine Zero Smoothie Bar collection is one of the first indie polish collections that I remember buying the entire collection of. They were SO GOOD.
Because these are neons, they aren’t showing up as bright AF in photos. The pink in particular wanted to be a butt and photograph as an orangey coral *side eye*. For the photo where my thumb is in view, I color corrected the pink to be a PANK. It didn’t occur to me until now to attempt to color correct the bottle in the photos to better show the PANK that it is, so ignore that and picture a neon PANK bottle too.
As far as glitter dispersal goes, I was really pleased with these polishes. I found despite me being kinda lazy as far as shaking them goes (I was watching Vampire Diaries while polishing and Damon distracted me), I got a good amount of glitters out on my nails. In typical glitter shred fashion, they do dry down textured.
My friend and YouTube mod Michelle, got me to test out the Salon Perfect Plumping top coat and not only did it dry down quickly, it also smoothed these glitters out like a champ! I am really impressed with that top coat, especially since it’s only $4! It does smell kind of funny, not funny bad just different from my go-to top coats. I’ll be using this top coat for some upcoming swatching because it is amazing!
The Gothy Neons were all 2-3 coaters on Miss Cindy. The yellow shade, Ghouls Just Wanna Have Sun (screen) was the sheerest of the bunch. It was also pretty patchy, I had to use a thicker third coat to get even opacity. I didn’t love love the application of that shade but it wasn’t terrible as far as yellows go.
The green shade, Mermaid For Each Other was also a three coater for me. I generally expect those two shades to be three coaters when working with neons so I’m not mad at needing three coats. The brand’s brush is similar to the Night Owl Lacquer and Heather’s Hues brushes so not super skinny but not a rounded paddle brush either.
I am still currently wearing this manicure so I can’t say how it wears or if there’s any staining. If you would like to check out Familar Polish I’ll put all of their links below this text! Let me know what you think of this manicure!
