Orly Futurism Winter 2022 Color Pass

[Press Samples/Purchased, affiliate links used – Post Disclosure Page]

Hi friends! Today’s blog post is for the newest collection from Orly. For Winter 2022 we have the Futurism collection. Not to start off on a bad foot but I knew as soon as I opened my Color Pass box that this collection wasn’t going to be my favorite for the year.

I do not generally like metallics/pearlized finishes. I will say, this collection does feel very wintery so there is that. Anyway, just in case anyone was confused about how I tagged this post for disclosures. I subscribe to the yearly Orly Color Pass. I was recently added to the Orly PR list, so they did send me this collection in PR on top of my buying it.

I am going to label all Orly posts as both Press Samples and Purchased until my Color Pass runs out (or I am just no longer on the PR list.)

As always, I will have links and sale details at the end of the post. Thanks Orly for sending me this collection to review!

Orly is a US based mainstream brand. Their polishes are in massive 18ml bottles, 12 free, cruelty free and vegan friendly.

Ascension

Description: a blue metallic shimmer

Ascension had a really great formula. The base was the perfect consistency, not too thick or too thin. The color is a very icy blue shade, with some greyish undertones.

The metallic shimmer showed a lot of brush strokes when wet. For the most part, they disappear as the polish dries. This is not the polish for me but I could see how someone else could like it.

My photos show Ascension in 3 coats plus glossy top coat. Coverage was ok in 2 coats but I had very obvious VNL, which I do think those of you with longer natural nails would also experience. No issues on removal.

Dynamism

Description: a neutral mauve metallic shimmer

Dynamism had a great formula. The base color for this leans a little taupe with some mauve undertones. Coincidentally, taupe and mauve are probably my 2 least favorite colors. So colorwise, this is really not for me. At all.

The shimmer is pretty brush strokey when wet but they do disappear as the polish dries. This polish also dries down dull so you will want top coat for a glossy finish.

My photos show Dynamism in 2 coats plus glossy top coat. Coverage was really good with this polish so I don’t really see anyone needing more than 2 coats for full coverage,

Fluidity

Description: gunmetal pixie shimmer features holographic micro glitter

Fluidity had a good formula. This was one of the more sheerer polishes in the collection. The micro glitter was really (really) tiny. I would have probably called them micro flakies due to the fact that they are not in anyway textured. [However, looking at my photos they do look like glitters so ignore that!] You’ll just need top coat for a glossy finish.

I do appreciate that Orly added a more sparkly time of shimmer that also has a holographic element. I wanted to love this one more mainly for that reason but I kinda felt like the holographic sparkle was very subtle. Like blink and you miss it subtle. It was pretty overcast the day I was swatching this one so maybe it would have been more impressed under direct sunlight?

This polish will likely be a 2-3 coater depending on nail length and personal preference. Coverage is ok in 2 coats but I needed a third to reach full opacity.

My photos show Fluidity in 3 coats plus glossy top coat. Nothing in here will be difficult to remove but the sparkle factor will make this messy.

Forward Momentum

Description: a purple metallic shimmer

Forward Momentum had a good but thinner formula. It had the tendency to run down the stem of my brush so I did do a slightly thicker layer on the first coat before I was able to factor in the running.

There were a lot of brush strokes through the shimmer when this polish was wet. Most of them disappear as the polish dries but some are still visible to the naked eye.

I will say this polish looked better in person than I expected it to. Still don’t love the finish but I thought this one looked pretty nice.

Industrial Playground

Description: a lilac metallic shimmer

Industrial Playground also had a great formula. It was a little bit thinner than I would like but not at all watery. This was my least favorite out of the collection, just based on color and finish. This has a very frosted look to it that I don’t really love.

When wet, this polish is incredibly brush strokey. From arm’s length away, you can’t see the brush strokes. However, when you bring the polish closer to your face the brush strokes are obvious.

My photos show Industrial Playground in 2 coats plus glossy top coat.

Urban Landscape

Description: green metallic shimmer

Urban Landscape had a good formula. This was the polish that I was most surprised that I kinda liked on me. I am sure by now you have figured out that I don’t like metallic shimmers but there was something about this one that I found… intriguing?

It’s an interesting color even if I don’t like the finish. I could almost see myself doing nail art on this polish and digging it more.

Like many of the other polishes, the shimmer shows a lot of brush strokes both when wet and dry. I also think this one will be a 2-3 coater depending on nai llenth and personal preference.

Color Pass Exclusives

The Winter 2022 Color Pass included a 1 ounce bottle of cuticle oil and a reusable shopping bag.

Final Thoughts

So positives first, I liked the color story. We vaguely have a rainbow which my eyes always find pleasing. I feel like the polishes fit a futuristic winterscape kinda moment.

Negatives, I cannot stress enough how much I dislike metallic shimmers and pearlescent finishes. I don’t know why I can never get down with them (except when gold is involved) but it’s just not for me. I liked last year’s winter collection a bit more than this one but I remember a lot of you all didn’t so maybe this is more people’s speed?

I think Orly had a great year collection wise. This was the only major disappointment for me. Looking at the photos, I think the polishes are pretty but they’re just not for me personally.
