Heather’s Hues October Monthly Duo – Swatch & Review

Heather’s Hues October Duo!

Today I’m sharing the October monthly duo from Heather’s Hues. Each month the members of the Heather’s Hues Facebook group vote on images for Heather to turn into polishes. The theme for October was fear. This month’s polishes are both thermals and will be great for Halloween nails. This duo is currently available on the Heather’s Hues website. I will have links to everything as well as a poll at the end of this post.

If you haven’t heard of this brand before, Heather’s Hues is an indie nail polish brand. Their polishes are handmade in the USA, 5 free, vegan and cruelty free. Heather’s Hues also has a variety of other handmade items available including my favorite lotion (WiTS) and even wax melts. Heather’s Hues has been featured on my blog and Instagram many many times!

Disclaimer: I was sent these products as PR in exchange for photographs and an honest review. All thoughts and opinions are my own. My photos were taken indoors with daylight bulbs, outdoors with natural light using a peel off base coat plus both matte and glossy top coats.

Meaning: the fear of spiders
Description: a thermal polish that’s black when cold to dark teal when warm. It’s packed with a mix of multichrome and iridescent flakes in pink, teal, violet, orange and gold and teal holo glitters.
Price: $12.50 for 15ml

Arachnophobia As someone who’s terrified of spiders, I keep trying to forget the name of this polish! The good news is that it’s gorgeous and doesn’t remind me of spiders. This applied very evenly and easily. I found it started changing to the warm state as I was applying it. It does dry slightly textured from the flakies and glitter. My photos show it in 3 coats but I think it was opaque in 2. I added a third coat to make sure it was 100% opaque in the warm state. I used 2 coats of top coat to get a completely smooth finish. I originally only did 1 layer of top coat but found the finished look was still slightly textured.

Meaning: (the fear of beautiful women)
Description: a tri-thermal that is black-brown when cold, then orange and yellow when warm. It is packed with a strong red-copper-gold-green shimmer and a mix of flakes and glitters in shades of red, orange, gold, green, and turquoise.
Price: $12.50 for 15ml

Venustraphobia transitioned quickly and easily on me. I found the formula and application similar to a glitter crelly. The base is thin (not bad thin) but the glitter and flakies give it a gritty texture. Not quite like a textured polish though. I didn’t notice a difference in glitter/flakie coverage being holding the bottle upside down and letting it sit normally between coats. The glitter/flakies all spread evenly and easily without any placement needed. I found it opaque in 2-3 coats depending on personal application. This will dry down textured so I would recommend 2 coats of a thick quick dry top coat or using a glitter eating top coat before a final top coat.

While I won’t pick a favorite, I will say that Venustraphobia is the real standout of this duo! It’s really unique looking and while it has “prugly” (pretty but ugly) vibes, I can’t deny it looks really cool. The colors paired with the shimmer and the glitter/flakie mix is just so intriguing! I was wearing it on my Instagram story a few days ago and got quite a few inquiries about it.

I want to note that thermal polishes do have a shelf life (generally at least 6-12 months) on how long they will change colors for. My oldest Heather’s Hues thermal was purchased in 2018 and last I checked (early this summer) it still transitioned. To get the most out of a thermal (all nail polish really) you’ll want to store them in a cool, dark place. I store my thermals with my other nail polish in the Ikea helmers. Once a thermal no longer changes color (aka dies), you can still wear them! The thermals that I own that have died, all stayed in the warm state but it’s not guaranteed to stay in the warm.
